We have all been at the point where the interviewer says “Okay, do you have any questions for us?”and you freeze because you think they have answered everything along the way. That might be the case, but you NEED to ask questions and rarely has everything been covered.

Firstly, our recommendation is to personalise the questions as best you can. For example, instead of “What does a typical day look like?” you want to ask “What would a typical day for me in this role look like?”That will allow the hiring manager to begin seeing you in the role!

Here are our Top 10 questions to ask the interviewerto ensure the job is right for you! Remember, you need to interview the company as much as they interview you, so don’t be afraid to ask away! These are in no particular order of importance by the way.

About the role:

  1. What’s the most important thing I should accomplish in the first 90 days?
  2. What’s the performance review process like here? How often would I be formally reviewed?
  3. How long before I will be… [meeting with clients, have responsibility for my own accounts, interacting with other departments, taking calls from customers etc.]?
  4. Do you expect my main responsibilities in this position to change in the next six months to a year?
  5. What learning and development opportunities will I have in this role?
  6. If you have direct reports in the role – Can you tell me about my direct reports? What are their strengths and the team’s biggest challenges?

About the company:

  1. What gets you most excited about the company’s future?
  2. How would you describe the company’s values? Providing they are not publicly available, if they are,ask how they specifically live one or all of the values on a day to day basis.
  3. How do you typically onboard employees? If the position will be remote, ask specifically about how remote employees are integrated into the company culture
  4. What are the next steps in the hiring process? This is really important as it allows you to plan your time and you will know whether there is psychometric testing, police checks or other probity checks required.

Asking more questions than the interviewer is great. It shows that you are:

Most of all, be yourself and relax. Good luck at your next interview. You’ve got this!
